Plot Summary

Plot: Philip (Steve Martin) is a clumsy do-gooder who runs Lifesavers, a suicide prevention hotline service in the funky beach community of Venice, California. His dedicated but inept co-workers include shy, lonely Catherine (Rita Wilson), who nurtures a secret crush on him, and Blanche (Madeline Kahn), the resident curmudgeon. Also circulating through Lifesavers are Gracie (Juliette Lewis), the feisty, young and pregnant owner of a used clothing store, and her Santa Claus-suited boyfriend (Anthony LaPaglia), an unemployable “artist” and flawed father-to-be. As if being served with an eviction notice on Christmas Eve weren't enough, Philip must hold the office together while dealing with unexpected developments involving love, birth, death and fruitcakes. But Christmas is a magical time, and this Christmas Eve could be the one special night that changes the lives of this lovable bunch of misfits.
Rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America.
