General Questions: Single Billing

  • Why did you change the way you bill?
We've made payments easier for you. Now, instead of being charged at two different times for the same rental (once for the first rental day, and once again for any additional rental days), you'll be charged a single time – even if you rent more than one disc during a single kiosk visit, and even if you return them on different days.

  • So when will I be charged?
You'll be charged after you return your disc. If you rent multiple discs at the same time, you'll be charged for all discs at the same time, soon after you return the last one.

If you don't return all your discs from a kiosk visit, you'll be charged for them at the end of the maximum rental period(s) for whatever you didn't return (or when you return another disc from that kiosk visit, whichever happens later).

If you purchase an item at the same time that you rent something, you'll be charged for your purchase and rental after you return your rental. If you don't return the rental, you'll be charged at the end of its maximum rental period.

  • I rented something and wasn't charged. How come?
If you've rented from Redbox before, you're probably used to being charged for your first rental day on the day after you rent. That's changed. Now you'll be charged after you return your disc. If you rented multiple discs during a single kiosk visit, you won't be charged till after you return the last one.

  • It says I won't be billed until all the discs are returned, but I see a "pending" charge on my statement. What is that?
The "pending" charge you're seeing is what the banks call a "preauthorization." When your card was swiped, the bank preauthorized the transaction by temporarily holding onto the fee for your first rental day. The money hasn't been taken out of your account yet.

  • When will this 'pending' charge drop off of my account?
Once you return the discs, the authorization will drop off and you'll be charged for the full amount that's owed.

  • I rented using a promo code, but I see a "pending" charge on my statement. Is this an error?
Nope, it's not an error – but don't worry, your promo code still worked. The "pending" charge you're seeing is what the banks call a "preauthorization." When your card was swiped, the bank preauthorized the transaction by holding onto the rental amount while it waited for the merchant's billing. Your bank will release the money in 3-7 business days. Keep in mind, though, that most promo codes only cover the first day of a DVD rental, and you'll still be charged for additional days you hold onto the disc. (If you used your promo code to rent a Blu-ray Disc® or game, or if the code was only a discount promo code, you'll still be responsible for any first-day charges that the promo code didn't cover).

  • If I rent using a promo code that doesn't cover the full amount of the initial day (for example, if I rent a Blu-ray Disc or game with my code), when will I be charged the difference?
All charges will occur when you return the last disc that you rented during your kiosk visit. If you return your disc before 9:00 p.m. on the day after you rented, you'll only be charged the amount that the promo code didn't cover.
