Based on the novel "La Mara," Honduran teenager Sabina Rivas intends to get to the United States, harboring dreams of becoming a famous singer and distancing herself from her former young lover, Jovany, now a vicious Mara Salvatrucha gang member. To traverse the Suchiate River (the first stage of the journey to the U.S.) and to dream about a better life is easy. The terrible challenge is to cross Mexico: Sabina is detained on the Mexican-Guatemalan border by brothel matron the Mara Salvatrucha, the Mexican Consul, Mexican and American migratory agents, drug trafficking networks, the army and an unfortunate reunion with Jovany.
