Two drifters catch wind of a rumor that a railroad worker has absconded with stolen gold to a ranch in Northern California. The two concoct a scheme in which the younger of the two, Saul, uses his charm to get a job as a ranch hand. But when he winds up having an affair with his boss's beautiful wife while dodging mercenaries who are also after the gold, Saul begins to wonder just who he can trust.
