How do I rent a movie from a kiosk?
Simple! Just follow the steps in our "
How redbox works
" tutorial.
How many rentals can I rent at one time?
The rental limits are different depending on if you are using a credit card with us for the first-time: (1) On your first visit, you may rent or purchase 2 DVDs. (2) Repeat customers may rent or purchase 5 DVDs.
How long is the rental period?
Return your movie by 9:00 p.m. the day after you rent it to avoid an extra day's rental fee. Need longer? No problem. For each additional night you keep your DVDs, you will be charged for an additional rental period plus any applicable tax.
What information is required for me to rent a DVD?
"To rent at a kiosk, you must swipe your credit card, then provide your zip code as part of the billing process.
Can I request a certain movie at a specific kiosk?
At this time, there is no capability to request a specific movie to be delivered to a specific kiosk. Instead, we provide the ability for you to
search for a movie
and then find the nearest kiosk that carries the title.
Does redbox provide receipts for reservations, rentals, or returns?
We don't provide printed receipts at the kiosks, but you can receive email confirmations for rentals and returns by providing a valid email address during the checkout process.
My disc looks smudged. How do I clean it?
All DVDs acquire a little dirt as they age. Please use a soft lint-free cloth, and wipe gently in a straight line from the center of the disc, outward to the edge. Only clean discs with a solution of water and a mild detergent or basic rubbing alcohol. Never use abrasives, solvents, or highly acidic cleansers.
Do I have to return my rentals to the same kiosk I rented from?
You can return your DVD to any redbox kiosk nationwide. Use our "
Find a redbox
" function to find a redbox location anywhere in the U.S.
How does the kiosk location know which DVD I returned?
Each DVD has an electronic bar code and security tag that the machine can read to track when a DVD is either rented or returned.
Can I copy, burn, or transfer a redbox movie for personal use?
No. Federal copyright laws prohibit copying or burning of rented material.
Issues
What do I do if I accidentally returned a personal disc back to the kiosk location?
Because our kiosks scan the DVDs before accepting them, your DVD will probably be rejected by the machine. If not, though, please contact our Customer Service Representatives 7 days a week, from 7:00 a.m. to midnight Central Time at 1.866.733.2693 (1.866.REDBOX3).
What happens if I return a DVD after 9:00 p.m.?
Your DVDs are due at any redbox kiosk at 9:00 p.m. the day after you rented them. For each additional night you keep your DVDs, you will be charged for an additional rental period plus any applicable tax.
What happens if I return a DVD from another company to a redbox kiosk location?
We make our best effort to return those DVDs to companies where they belong. We can't promise they'll be returned in time for you to avoid that company's own fees.
Why I am not receiving any receipts?
We email receipts to customers who add their email address at the kiosk. You may want to make sure that redbox is added to your mail provider's address book to ensure our emails do not end up in spam filters.
What do I do if I lost the plastic case?
You can purchase a new jewel case for just $1 right from any redbox kiosk. Look for "Empty Case" under 'E' when sorting DVDs alphabetically, or go to the last product when sorting by release date.
What happens if I or my DVD player damages the redbox DVD?
In that case, you are responsible for the cost of replacing the DVD: $25.00 (plus tax).
What should I do if my DVD rental won?t play, is scratched, or broken?
If your DVD rental is damaged, please notify us in one of three ways: (1) on redbox.com, go to Your Account, and click the "Report a Problem" link on the Rental History page, or (2) through the
Contact Us
form, or (3) by contacting a redbox Customer Service Representative 7 days a week, from 7:00 a.m. to midnight Central Time at 1.866.733.2693 (1.866.REDBOX3).
What should I do if the kiosk is out of service or full and won't accept the DVD?
We try to stay on top of such breakdowns by using software systems to constantly check our kiosks. But if you encounter any issues with the kiosk, please contact our Customer Service Representatives directly 7 days a week, from 7:00 a.m. to midnight Central Time at 1.866.733.2693 (1.866.REDBOX3)
What happens when the kiosk inside the store or restaurant is closed, and I need to return my DVD?

How does redbox determine which movies to stock at the kiosks?
Movies are our passion! A lucky few of us cinephiles are on a special team that selects the movies we carry. Each movie title is evaluated on a number of different criteria, including popularity of the movie, how well it did at the box office, and how likely we feel our customers will enjoy the movie.
Are there multiple copies of a movie in a kiosk?
Each redbox kiosk generally carries hundreds of titles with anywhere from one copy to several dozen copies of the same movie title at any time. We are always trying to strike a balance between offering a wide variety of DVDs and enough copies of the latest new releases.
Does redbox rent movies that are still in the theater?
We typically carry movies after their theatrical release is completed. However, there are exceptions. For example, when a movie that has ended its run receives prestigious awards, it may be re-released in theaters. Additionally, we do rent some titles, such as animated films, that may never have had a theatrical release.
How often does redbox update the kiosk locations with new movies?
We add new DVD releases to every redbox on Tuesdays.
Is the inventory in my local kiosk different from that of other kiosks near me?
We try to be consistent with the movie titles we provide to all kiosk locations, but there are variations in inventories based on how our customers shop. In the end, a particular kiosk's inventory is based on the rental habits of the community that uses that kiosk.
Is there any guarantee that a movie will be available at the kiosk locations?
We constantly monitor our kiosks to know when they are full or empty, but specific inventory is influenced by how many DVDs are rented and returned to a particular kiosk. The best way to
check the inventory
of a kiosk is by viewing the available titles online.

What does MPAA stand for?
The Motion Picture Association of America is a trade association that provides standard ratings for movies released at movie theaters. To learn more about the rating system, please visit the MPAA web site.
What movie ratings does redbox carry?
We carry movies rated G, PG, PG-13, and R by the Motion Picture Association of America. Redbox does not carry NC-17 titles. To learn more about the rating system, visit the MPAA web site.
Can children under the age of 17 rent R-rated movies?
No. We require that our customers validate their age while renting any movies that are rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA)
Does redbox edit or censor movies?
No. We never edit or censor any of the movies that we carry.
Does redbox carry foreign-language films?
Yes. We carry a select variety foreign-language films.

How can I see my rental and payment/billing information?
You can quickly and easily check your rental and invoice history on redbox.com when you create an online account and then attach a credit card to that account. We do not automatically tie your personal data and credit card information unless you choose to do so via your online profile.

How do I unsubscribe from your email list?
There are three ways to unsubscribe from our contact list: (1) Click on the "Unsubscribe" links in our weekly new release email. This will unsubscribe you from the newsletter, but you will continue to receive receipts. (2) You can remove your address manually at our kiosks during the check out process. This will remove your address from both the newsletter and receipts. (3) Redbox.com account holders can manage email preferences online by clicking "Your Account" and then "Edit Notifications & Subscriptions."
How do I edit information stored in my account?
Start by logging into the site. Look for the Your Account link at the top, to the right of your name.
When should I log out?
If you are using a public computer, you should always log out before you leave the terminal. You'll be able to tell if you are logged out if the greeting at the top reads "Welcome to redbox!" rather than your name.

What personal information does redbox keep on file, and how is it used?
When you open a redbox account, you give us your name, email address and ZIP code (as well as some email preferences). We use your email address to provide you with return confirmations and receipts of your transactions. We also allow you to opt-in and opt-out of our weekly newsletters and SMS programs. If you choose to use a credit card to pay online, we store that and use Secure Socket Layer (SSL) software to encrypt your data during transmission.
Is my personal information secure?
Absolutely! We employ state-of-the-art technology to ensure the privacy of all our customers' data. Here are some of our many security features: (1) All of our credit card transactions meet the Data Security Standard of the credit card industry. (2) All of our kiosks are actively monitored and regularly inspected both on site and remotely.
Does redbox share or sell my personal information with any other companies?

Is the online reservation system secure?
Absolutely! We employ state-of-the-art technology to ensure all the privacy of all our customers' data. Here are some of our many security features: (1) All of our credit card transactions are regularly required to meet the Data Security Standard of the credit card industry. (2) We encrypt all your information during transmission by using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) software. (3) We reveal only the last four digits of your credit card numbers when confirming an order. (Of course, we transmit the entire credit card number to the appropriate credit card company during order processing.) (4) All of our kiosks are actively monitored and regularly inspected both on site and remotely.
Is everything I see on redbox.com available at a kiosk location near me?
Because our DVDs are constantly being rented and returned, sometimes to different locations, the inventory at a particular kiosk is ever-changing. We recommend that you
use our "Find a Movie" function
to determine if a particular title is available near you.
Can I reserve a movie from any redbox location?
Yes, you can rent or return your DVD to any redbox nationwide.

If I reserve a movie online, is there a chance it may not be available at the kiosk?
No. If you've received your confirmation email or have waited for the confirmation screen on redbox.com, your movie is reserved and waiting for you to pick it up.
Can I redeem promotional codes online?
Sorry, no. We do not currently allow for promo codes to be used online.
How does redbox determine when to charge for online reservations?
Once you have completed an online reservation, the DVD is taken out of circulation and reserved just for you. You'll be charged for that night's rental whether you pick up the movie or not.
What happens if I do not pick up a movie I have reserved online?
If you do not pick up, watch, and return the movie by the time stated on your online reservation confirmation, you will still be charged for one night's rental. The online reservation system guarantees the movie is held for you, the same way that an e-ticket holds a seat on an airplane.

What are online reservations?

What is an online account credit?
An online account credit works just like a promo code, but online. You can use a credit toward your first night rental, but only for online reservation.
How can I get an account credit?
After making your first online reservation, you will receive a credit directly in your online account to use during your next reservation. Only new online accounts as of April 28, 2010 can receive the online account credit.
How does an account credit work?
Once you?ve received a credit, you can use it towards your first night?s rental. A credit can only be used for online reservation.
Where do I use the account credit?
After completing your first online reservation, you will see your credit as a payment option during your next online reservation during check out.
Who is eligible for an online account credit?
Only new online accounts as of April 28, 2010 are eligible for the online account credit.
Where can I view my online credit status?

What do I do if I registered for an account, but didn?t get my free rental credit?

Can I use a promo code when reserving a movie with the iPhone® app?
At this time you can only redeem a promo code at the redbox kiosk.
How can I view movie titles outside of my selected redbox?
We make it easy for iPhone® app users to toggle between inventory within a selected redbox or overall available by clicking the ON/OFF switch at the bottom of the app. ON indicates you are searching a single redbox, while OFF indicates you are searching the entire redbox network of kiosks.
Do you support any other mobile devices other than iPhone®?
You can access

on other mobile phones, however, we have only optimized the experience for the iPhone®.
iPhone® App
Why is the iPhone® app load slow at times while other times it is lightning fast?
We've made several speed enhancements since the iPhone® App first launched, however, the slow speed you may be experiencing is most-likely due to the cellular data connection you are using. This is why the iPhone® app will load faster on a wifi connection.
Why does the iPhone® app default to my most recent redbox?
We have tried to develop the iPhone® app so that it requires the least number of steps to complete an online reservation to save our customers time. A majority of our customers prefer to rent and return to a single kiosk. However, the iPhone® App does allow you to store multiple favorites, it will only default to one location.
Will the iPhone® app work on my iPhone® and iPod Touch®?
Yes. The redbox iPhone® app works on both the iPhone® and iPod Touch®. We currently support 3G and 3GS models of the iPhone®, and all generations of the iPod Touch® with the software version 3.0 or greater.
Is the redbox iPhone® app free?
Yes. We have no plans to charge our customers for the convenience that the iPhone® app provides.
Can I reserve more than one movie at a time using the iPhone® app?
We currently do not have a way to reserve multiple movies at one time. You will need to make two separate reservations.

What is Blu-ray™?
Blu-ray™, also known as Blu-ray Disc®, is the name of a next-generation High Definition optical disc format. Blu-ray™ discs store more data and provide sharper, better looking images.
How much does Blu-ray™ cost to rent?
Blu-ray Disc® rental is $1.50 plus any applicable tax for each night. If you hold onto your disc for 25 nights or more, you'll be charged the $33.50 purchase price and the disc is yours to keep.
Can I return a Blu-ray Disc® to any redbox location?

Why does a Blu-ray Disc® cost more to rent than other DVDs?
Since a Blu-ray Disc® plays higher-quality images than standard DVDs, it costs more to produce. Blu-ray™ users accept the higher prices because they feel that the discs provide a better movie-watching experience.
Will my Blu-ray Disc® play on my old DVD player?
No. A Blu-ray Disc® will not play on Standard Definition DVD players. You'll need a Blu-ray™ player or a device that plays a Blu-ray Disc®, like a Sony Play Station 3.
Is a Blu-ray Disc® compatible with all Blu-ray™ players?
Compatibility with Blu-ray™ players is not guaranteed. Some older Blu-ray™ players may need upgrades in order to work. If you have issues playing a Blu-ray Disc® on your Blu-ray™ player, please contact our Customer Care team at 1-866-REDBOX3.
What's the difference between DVD and Blu-ray Disc™?
They're the same size and shape, but the readable (downward-facing) side of a Blu-ray Disc® is blue instead of silver, and it has the Blu-ray™ logo on top.
Which devices are compatible with Blu-ray™?
Blu-ray™ Compatible Players and Sony PlayStation 3.
Can I watch a Blu-ray Disc® on my computer?
Only if your computer has a special Blu-ray Disc® drive installed. Most computers do not have this type of drive, but it can be ordered and installed. Some new computers can be ordered with a Blu-ray™ drive already installed.
How can I tell if the disc I'm renting is a Blu-ray Disc®?
At the redbox kiosk, Blu-ray Discs® are identified by a blue strip at the bottom of the box art that has the text "BLU-RAY".
If I use a promo code, how much will I be charged?
Promo codes used for Blu-ray™ rental will cover $1 of your first night's rental. That means you'll only be charged $.50 for your first night.
What if I forget to bring a Blu-ray Disc® back?
Blu-ray™ rentals are $1.50 plus any applicable tax for each night. For every additional night you keep the disc, you'll be charged the nightly fee plus applicable tax. If you hold onto the movie for 25 days or more, the system will automatically charge you the $33.50 purchase price of the Blu-ray™ rental (you pay the first $1.50 at the kiosk), at which point the movie is yours to keep.
How many Blu-ray Discs® can I rent at one time?
If you're renting with redbox for the first time, you may rent 2 Blu-ray Discs®. Returning customers may rent 5 Blu-ray Discs® at a time.

Are there taxes on rentals or purchases?
Yes, applicable taxes are added to your rentals and purchases at redbox.
Why are the redbox prices so low?
We offer everyday value pricing on new release DVD rentals because we have fully automated the traditional video store experience. Since we aren't stocking shelves or ringing up registers, we can pass these savings on to you.
Will I be charged if I don?t return a movie rental?
For each day you keep out a rental you will be charged the nightly fee plus applicable tax. You have 25 days to return the movie before the system automatically charges you the $24 purchase price of the DVD (you pay the fist $1 at the kiosk), at which point the movie is yours to keep.

To request a reactivation of a credit card, please call a Customer Support representative at 1.866.733.2693, 7 days a week, from 7:00 a.m. to midnight Central Time. Have the last four digits of your credit or debit card available for verification.
Why do I have to provide a credit card if I have a coupon for a free movie?
Your debit or credit card acts as a security deposit for the movie. It also provides a convenient way for us to charge you for additional days that you may want to view the movie.
Can I change my payment method from a credit card to a checking account?
Sorry, no. At this time we do not accept checking accounts for payment.
When am I billed for my online reservations?
You are billed for the initial night's rental when you pick up your DVD from the kiosk. If you keep the movie for extra nights, that amount will be charged to your debit or credit card when you return the DVD to the kiosk.
How do I add a promo code to my rental, if I forgot it at the kiosk?
Promo codes are required at the time of pick up from the kiosk. If you forgot your promo code, you may be able to use it on your next visit.

Where is the security code on my credit/debit card?
For American Express, the verification code is the 4 digits on the front of the card, while for Discover, Visa, and Mastercard, the verification code is the last 3 digits on the back of the card.
What is the redbox refund policy?
It is our policy to not refund charges that are older than 90 days.

Can I purchase movies through redbox?
Used DVDs are available for sale at select redbox kiosks. To view them, click on the "BUY USED DVDS" button from the main page of the kiosk interface. DVD sales are not currently available online.
Can I purchase movies online from redbox?
Sorry, no. At this time we do not sell DVDs through our website.
Can I purchase gift cards or coupons for movie rentals in bulk?
Sorry, no. At this time we do not sell gift cards or sell promo codes in bulk.

What methods of payment does redbox accept?
We currently accepts both debit and credit cards, including American Express, Discover, Visa and Mastercard.
Does redbox offer a monthly subscription package?
Sorry, we do not currently offer monthly subscription services for DVD rentals.
Do I need to be a member of redbox in order to rent DVDs?
No. There's no membership card, membership fee, or sign-up required to rent a DVD from our kiosks. If you're over 18 with a valid credit (or debit) card, you can use our kiosks as often as you like.

How can I receive promotional codes from redbox?
